When my brother and I celebrated our twenty-second birthday with our family, we also observed our first anniversary as legal residents (as fully grown adults) of the city of Chicago, unaware of the prizes, surprises, and challenges the city had in store for us. Uncertain how we would navigate the complicated public transportation networks taking visitors and locals alike to various locales around the city. Unknown to the subtle and overt dangers inhabiting the corners, back alleys, cracks, crevices, and streets, just waiting to prey on those minding their own business and not their surroundings.
